CITY OPENS DISASTER RELIEF
CENTER- (714-380-0535)
In response to the devastating brush fires that damaged or destroyed over 180
homes in Yorba Linda last weekend, the City is opening a local Disaster Relief
Center to help affected residents. This new Center will supplement the services
that are currently being provided at the multi-agency Local Assistance Center
at the East Anaheim Gymnasium in the City of Anaheim.
ALERTOC (Often known as Reverse 9-1-1)
AlertOC is a mass notification system designed to keep Orange County residents
and businesses informed of emergencies and certain community events. By registering
with AlertOC, time-sensitive voice messages from the County or City in which
you live or work may be sent to your home, cell or business phone. Text messages
may also be sent to cell phones, e-mail accounts and hearing impaired receiving
devices. It is also commonly called Reverse 9-1-1, but this a trademark.
To sign up for AlertOC, go to www.alertoc.com
and you will see a map of Orange County. Simply click on the City of Yorba Linda.
Once you are the Yorba Linda screen, click on the appropriate option and then
fill out the required information. Once you have submitted the information,
the City and County will be better able to get the word out to you in an emergency.
The City encourages all of our residents to register!
FEDERAL DISASTER DECLARATION APPROVED
On 11/18/08, the President declared a Major Disaster in the counties of Los
Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and Santa Barbara for the fires beginning on 11/13/08,
providing individual assistance, public assistance (debris removal and emergency
protective measures), and hazard mitigation. The declaration does not cover
permanent repair costs for damaged infrastructure. However, additional designations
may be made upon further evaluation.
BEWARE OF UNLICENSED CONTRACTORS!
Beware of unlicensed and/or fraudulent contractors, architects, engineers or
insurance brokers.
The CA Department of Insurance Law Enforcement Division will begin passing
out information packets in the fire-affected areas starting today, November
19, 2008. Their primary purpose will be to hand out the flyers to help prevent
fire victims become further victimized by fraudulent or unlicensed contractors.
Later, they will begin driving through the affected areas looking for anyone
performing construction and verifying they have a license, as it is illegal
for an unlicensed contractor to be in a disaster area.

FIRE RECOVERY INFORMATION
The City of Yorba Linda is very sensitive to the needs of residents who have
been affected by the recent brush fires. The City is working in conjunction
with the cities of Anaheim and Brea, as well as the County of Orange, Californias
Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to
expedite and provide the necessary aid to the affected areas. City staff are
also conducting inspections for safety purposes and assessing the damage in
order to seek financial aid for our community.
There are no mandatory evacuation orders still in effect. However, the Brea
Police Department is posted at various intersections, patrolling and blockading
certain streets to ensure that only residents access the fire damaged areas
and to prevent looters or unwanted onlookers. In addition, the Orange County
Fire Authority will have chaplains and fire units touring the neighborhoods
to meet with residents.
Anyone interested in making donations or volunteering their time should contact
the American Red Cross-Southern Orange County Chapter on the provided link.
It is recommended that you replace your air conditioner filters in order to
reduce the smell of smoke within your home.
